What is PLA and is it actually plastic free? (Honest answer)

PLA — polylactic acid — is a bioplastic made from plant starch, usually corn or sugarcane. It sounds like it should be plastic free, but it isn't: PLA is still a plastic polymer, it still behaves like plastic in water, and it will not break down in a landfill, a drain, or the sea in any meaningful timeframe under normal conditions. If your wipes list PLA on the ingredients, they are not plastic free.

Why do wipe brands use PLA if it's still plastic?

PLA has a genuinely useful quality: it's derived from renewable plant feedstocks rather than fossil fuels. That makes it attractive to brands trying to reduce their carbon footprint or move away from petroleum-based fibres like polyester. And it does biodegrade — eventually — but only under very specific conditions: industrial composting facilities running at sustained high temperatures (above 55–60°C), with the right humidity and microbial environment.

In practice, most PLA fibre in wet wipes ends up in general waste, which goes to landfill or incineration. In landfill, PLA behaves almost identically to conventional plastic: it doesn't break down within any timeframe that matters ecologically. In rivers, coastal water, or the sea, it persists in the same way synthetic fibres do — fragmenting into microplastics rather than truly decomposing.

So brands can legitimately say PLA is plant-derived. They can't legitimately say it behaves like a natural material in the real world. The distinction matters.

Does PLA count as a plastic fibre under the UK 2027 wipe ban?

Yes. The UK's upcoming ban — which comes into force in October 2027 — prohibits the sale of wet wipes containing plastic fibres. The legislation specifically includes PLA and other bioplastics, because the concern driving the ban is physical fibre persistence (blocking drains, creating fatbergs, shedding microplastics) rather than whether the raw material came from a plant or a petroleum refinery.

PLA fibres behave like plastic fibres in sewers, waterways and waste infrastructure. They don't break apart in water. They don't pass the flushability tests that matter. That's why they're included in the ban alongside polyester, polypropylene and other conventional synthetics.

This is a point worth pausing on, because a lot of brands have marketed PLA-based wipes as the eco-friendly transition away from plastic. Consumers who bought those wipes in good faith were often doing so because the branding suggested they were making a meaningfully better choice. The 2027 legislation is, in part, a correction to that: plant-based origin doesn't equal environmental safety.

What fibres are actually plastic free?

The fibres that are genuinely plastic free are natural cellulosic materials: cotton, viscose (also called rayon), and lyocell (often sold as Tencel). These are derived from plant matter and — critically — they break down in water and in the environment in the way you'd expect a natural fibre to.

Cotton is the most straightforward of the three. It's a natural fibre with no synthetic processing required to create the web structure used in wipes. It breaks down, it composts, it doesn't shed plastic particles. It's also the gentlest option for skin, which is why it's the go-to for sensitive skin and newborn wipes.

Viscose and lyocell are semi-synthetic: they start as plant cellulose (usually wood pulp or bamboo) but are processed chemically to create the fibre. They're generally considered plastic free because the final fibre is cellulosic rather than a polymer, but the environmental credentials vary depending on how sustainably the source material is grown and how cleanly the processing is done. What all three have in common, and what PLA lacks, is that they break down in normal environmental conditions — not just in an industrial composting facility.

How to tell whether a wipe actually contains PLA

Brands are not always forthcoming about this. Here's what to look for:

On the pack itself: Ingredient lists on wipes sometimes list the fibre composition separately from the liquid ingredients. Look for terms like "PLA", "polylactic acid", "bioplastic" or "plant-based fibres" in the substrate description. "Plant-based" on its own tells you the source, not the chemistry — it could mean cotton or it could mean PLA.

In marketing language: Phrases like "made from plants", "renewable fibres" or "bio-based" are flags worth investigating further. These describe origin, not biodegradability or plastic-free status. Compare them against "100% cotton" or "plastic free" — both of which have a more specific and verifiable meaning.

On the brand's website: A plastic-free brand should be able to tell you exactly what fibres the wipe substrate is made from. If that information isn't there, it's reasonable to ask.

Third-party certifications: OK Compost HOME certification (from TÜV Austria) is a meaningful one for wipes — it means the product will break down in a home compost environment at ambient temperatures, which rules out PLA. OEKO-TEX certification covers chemical safety but doesn't specifically address plastic-free fibre content.

What dinky wipes uses instead of PLA

We've never used PLA. Every dinky wipe — across the sensitive, flushable and antibacterial ranges — is plastic free in the straightforward sense: no synthetic fibres, no PLA, no polyester, no polypropylene. Our sensitive wipes are 100% cotton. That's not a marketing claim we're trying to make complicated; it's just what's in them.

The reason we're upfront about PLA specifically is that it's become a source of genuine confusion in the wipes market. Brands using PLA are often doing so with good intentions — reducing fossil fuel dependency is a real goal — but the "plastic free" framing that sometimes accompanies those products isn't accurate, and parents and people trying to make better choices deserve to know that.

The 2027 UK ban will, at minimum, force clearer labelling. But in the meantime, the simplest check is this: if a wipe doesn't say "100% cotton" or name a specific plastic-free natural fibre, it's worth reading the small print before assuming it's genuinely plastic free.
