How to stop wet wipes drying out (and why they go dry in the first place)

Wet wipes dry out because air gets in — either through a flap that doesn't seal properly, a pack left open by accident, or a lid that's been opened and shut so many times the seal has given up. Once the moisture starts escaping, it doesn't stop, and a pack that was fine on Monday is a stack of scratchy cotton squares by Thursday. The good news: a few simple habits (and a pack that actually seals) make a big difference.

Why do wet wipes dry out so fast?

The liquid in a wet wipe isn't just water — it's a water-based solution that evaporates readily once it's exposed to air. The wipe itself is porous, so evaporation happens from the surface of every single layer in the stack, not just the top one. That means even a small gap in the lid or flap is enough to dry out an entire pack over a few days.

Temperature accelerates things. A pack sitting in a warm car, next to a radiator, or in a sunny changing bag pocket will dry out faster than one kept in a cool room. Altitude and dry air — on planes, for instance — also speed up moisture loss noticeably.
