The correct way to dispose of wet wipes is to put them in a general waste bin — not the toilet, not the recycling, and not compost. That applies to almost every wipe on the market, including ones labelled 'biodegradable'. The only exception is a wipe specifically certified as flushable, and even then, you should only flush it if your plumbing can handle it.
Why can't most wet wipes go down the toilet?
Wet wipes don't behave like toilet paper in water. Toilet paper is designed to disintegrate within seconds of getting wet — that's the whole point. Wet wipes are engineered to do the opposite: stay intact and hold together under pressure, so they actually do the job you're using them for.
Most wipes are made from synthetic fibres — polyester, polypropylene, or similar plastics — that don't break down in water at all. When you flush them, they travel through your pipes intact, catch on grease or debris, and start building up into blockages. At scale, this is how fatbergs form: enormous, solidified masses of fat, wipes and other flushed material that block sewer pipes and cost water companies millions to clear.
In the UK, Water UK estimates that around 93% of the material found in sewer blockages is wet wipes. That's not a rounding error — wipes are genuinely the primary cause.
Even wipes made from plant-based or natural fibres — cotton, bamboo, viscose — often contain synthetic binders that hold the fabric together. Those binders don't break down quickly enough to avoid causing blockages. 'Biodegradable' on a wipe packet tells you something about what eventually happens in a landfill or compost environment; it tells you nothing about what happens in a sewer.
What does 'flushable' actually mean, and can I trust it?
Flushable is a specific technical claim, and in the UK it's increasingly regulated. A genuinely flushable wipe should disperse rapidly in water — breaking apart within minutes rather than hours — and pass through both domestic and municipal plumbing without causing blockages.
The problem is that historically, the term was used loosely. Wipes that cleared a toilet bowl without jamming it were often marketed as flushable, even if they then caused problems further down the pipe. Independent tests by water authorities repeatedly found that most 'flushable' wipes on the market didn't break apart quickly enough to be genuinely safe.
The Fine to Flush standard, developed by Water UK, is the benchmark that matters in the UK. A wipe certified to this standard has been independently tested to confirm it disperses safely in real-world conditions.

So where exactly should wet wipes go?
General waste bin. That's it. Not recycling, not the toilet, not a compost bin in the garden.
Wet wipes can't go in household recycling because:
- They're made from fibres (not paper or card), so they don't go through standard paper recycling streams.
- They're contaminated with whatever you've just cleaned up — bodily fluids, chemicals, food — which contaminates other recyclables in the same bin.
- Even if the fibres were recyclable in theory, the collection and sorting infrastructure for wet wipes doesn't exist in UK kerbside recycling.
Wet wipes can't go in a garden compost bin because:
- Most contain synthetic fibres or binders that won't break down in home composting conditions.
- Even cotton wipes may take years to break down without the right conditions, and any chemical residue ends up in your compost.
If you use wipes made from 100% natural fibres with no synthetic additives — and the product can confirm this clearly — industrial composting may be an option in some areas, but home composting remains unsuitable for the vast majority of wipes.
The bin is not a cop-out. It's genuinely the most responsible option for most wipes, because it sends them to landfill or energy recovery — not into the water system where they cause the most damage.
How to handle wipe disposal when you're out and about
This is where it gets practical. You're changing a nappy in a public toilet, wiping sticky hands at a festival, cleaning up after a toddler in a café — what do you actually do with the used wipe?
Public toilets: Use the sanitary bin if there is one, or wrap the wipe in a piece of toilet paper and put it in the general bin. Do not flush it. The sanitary bin is the right place — it's collected and disposed of as controlled waste.
No bin available: This happens. Wrap the used wipe in its packaging or a spare nappy bag, and carry it until you find a bin. It's annoying, but it's the responsible call. A small pocket bin (travel-sized, with a sealing lid) is genuinely useful if you're doing this regularly — festival-goers, campers and parents with young children swear by them.
In the car: Keep a small lidded bin or a resealable bag in the glovebox. If you're stocking wipes in the car for hand cleaning or sticky emergencies, you need somewhere to put the used ones. A compostable nappy bag works well for this — seal it, bin it when you get home.
Camping or off-grid: Follow leave-no-trace principles. Used wipes should be packed out and disposed of in a proper bin, not buried. Buried wipes — even cotton ones — take years to break down in typical soil conditions, and they disrupt the local environment in the meantime.
Keeping packs small helps here. One reason we made dinky wipes pocket-sized is that a pack you'll actually carry is a pack you'll actually use — and use properly. A massive tub of wipes stays in the changing bag; a pocket-sized pack goes with you.
What about the packaging — is that recyclable?
This varies by brand. Rigid plastic tubs and flip-top lids are generally recyclable through kerbside collection if your local authority accepts them (check the OPRL label — the green recycling symbol with a percentage). Soft plastic pouches are usually not accepted in kerbside recycling, but can be taken to supermarket soft plastic collection points in many areas.
With dinky wipes, the packs are small by design — less material to deal with — and we don't use plastic in the wipes themselves (no plastic fibres, no PLA). But the honest answer is: check the specific packaging, don't assume.
Will the 2027 UK wipe ban make this less of a problem?
Somewhat, but not entirely. From October 2027, the UK will ban the sale of wet wipes containing plastic fibres. That removes the worst offenders from shelves — the polyester and polypropylene wipes that absolutely will never break down in water. It's a meaningful step.
But it won't mean all wipes suddenly become flushable. Cotton, bamboo and viscose wipes that contain synthetic binders still won't be safe to flush. The disposal rule stays the same: bin it, unless it's specifically certified as flushable.
The ban does mean that wipes which are plastic-free will be easier to find — and the environmental impact of the ones that end up in landfill will be lower, since they won't leave microplastic residue behind.

Can you flush wet wipes if they say biodegradable?
