How long do wet wipes take to decompose (and does it depend on what they're made of)?

Most conventional wet wipes — the kind found in nearly every UK bathroom and changing bag — take roughly 100 years to decompose, if they break down at all. That's because the majority are made from plastic fibres (polyester, polypropylene, or a blend), which don't biodegrade in any meaningful timeframe. Cotton wipes are a different story: pure cotton can decompose in as little as a few weeks in the right conditions, making the fibre choice the single biggest factor in how long a wipe lingers once it leaves your bin.

Why does fibre type make such a big difference to decomposition time?

Decomposition — real decomposition, not just breaking into smaller pieces — requires microorganisms to digest the material. Natural fibres like cotton are made of cellulose, a compound that bacteria and fungi have been breaking down for millions of years. Given warmth, moisture and microbial activity (the conditions in a compost heap, for instance), cotton fibres can fully degrade within a matter of weeks to a few months.

Synthetic fibres like polyester and polypropylene are petroleum-derived plastics. Microorganisms have no meaningful evolutionary toolkit for digesting them. Instead of decomposing, they fragment — over decades or centuries — into progressively smaller plastic particles, ultimately contributing to the microplastic load in soil and waterways. The widely cited estimate is that a polyester-based wipe can persist for 100 years or more in landfill, with fragments potentially lasting far longer.

This is also why fibre type matters beyond the bin. Wipes that reach rivers or the sea — via sewer overflows, for instance, which is exactly where flushed wipes end up — will shed microplastics into the water column. A cotton wipe in the same situation would eventually break apart and biodegrade. Not ideal either way, but a categorically different outcome.

Does 'biodegradable' on the label actually mean it will decompose quickly?

Not necessarily — and this is where a lot of well-intentioned shoppers get caught out.

The word 'biodegradable' has no legally enforced definition in UK consumer labelling. A wipe can technically claim biodegradability if it will eventually break down under some conditions, even if those conditions are 'buried in industrial compost at a specific temperature and humidity for five years'. That's not what most people picture when they see the label.

Bamboo wipes are a common example. Bamboo fibre itself is natural, but most bamboo wipes contain synthetic binders — polyester or similar — to give the wipe its strength and texture. Those binders don't biodegrade, which means the wipe as a whole doesn't either, regardless of what the bamboo content would do on its own. The label says bamboo; the landfill sees plastic.

The honest questions to ask of any wipe marketed as biodegradable:

  • What are all the fibres in it (not just the headline one)?
  • Under what specific conditions was biodegradability tested?
  • Is there third-party certification, or just a marketing claim?

If a brand can't answer the first question clearly, that's a signal.

What about 'flushable' wipes — do they decompose faster?

Flushable wipes are specifically designed to break apart in water, which is different from biodegradability. A wipe that disperses quickly in the wastewater system may still take a long time to fully biodegrade once the fibres settle somewhere — but the key benefit of a genuinely flushable wipe is that it doesn't stay intact long enough to contribute to blockages or fatbergs.

The important caveat: most wipes marketed as flushable don't actually break down quickly enough in real sewer conditions. The flushable wipes category is full of products that pass lab tests but fail in practice. Only wipes independently verified to meet the IWSFG (International Water Services Flushability Group) guidelines have been demonstrated to disperse safely in wastewater infrastructure — and even then, flushing should be the exception, not the default, because sewers aren't designed to handle large volumes of any wipe material.

For the record: our dinky flushable wipe is designed to break down in water, but we still say this clearly — most wet wipes should go in the bin, not the toilet. Flushing is for toilet paper. Full stop.

How does landfill affect decomposition timelines?

Landfill is a surprisingly hostile environment for decomposition — even for materials that would otherwise biodegrade readily. Modern sanitary landfill sites are engineered to minimise leachate (liquid runoff) and gas production, which means they're sealed, compacted, and largely anoxic (oxygen-free). Without oxygen, the aerobic bacteria that drive most decomposition can't function.

In practice, this means even cotton or paper wipes decompose far more slowly in landfill than they would in open soil or a compost heap. A cotton wipe that might break down in weeks in a garden compost bin could take months or longer in a sealed landfill cell.

None of this is an argument for flushing wipes instead — sewer disposal creates its own environmental problems, as anyone who's read about fatbergs will know. It's simply worth being clear-eyed that 'goes in the bin' doesn't mean 'disappears quickly', regardless of what the wipe is made of. The best case for natural fibre wipes isn't that landfill is fine — it's that natural fibres don't shed persistent microplastics in the process, and they stand a realistic chance of breaking down if they end up anywhere other than a sealed landfill cell.

What's actually changing with the UK wet wipe ban in 2027?

From October 2027, the UK will ban the sale of wet wipes containing plastic fibres. This directly targets the wipes that present the greatest long-term decomposition problem — the polyester and polypropylene-based products that currently dominate supermarket shelves.

The ban doesn't require wipes to be biodegradable or certified to any decomposition standard. It simply removes plastic fibres from the equation, which in practice means manufacturers will have to switch to plant-based alternatives: cotton, viscose, lyocell, or similar natural materials.

Brands that have been using plastic fibres all along will need to reformulate. Brands that never used them — dinky wipes included — are already compliant. Our whole range uses cotton or natural fibres, with no plastic fibres and no PLA (a bioplastic that sounds natural but behaves more like conventional plastic in most decomposition environments). Does how you dispose of a wipe change how quickly it decomposes?

Yes, significantly — but the options are more limited than people assume.

General waste (bin → landfill): the most common destination. Decomposition is slow regardless of fibre type, due to landfill conditions. Natural fibres won't shed microplastics; plastic fibres will fragment over time.

Home composting: cotton wipes can decompose in a garden compost heap over weeks to months, provided they're not saturated with non-compostable substances (some cleaning agents, for instance, aren't compost-friendly). Check what's on your wipe before composting it.

Flushing: only appropriate for wipes specifically certified as flushable — and even then, sparingly. Most wipes must not be flushed.
