Cotton wipes are better than plastic wipes for most uses: they're gentler on skin, they don't shed synthetic fibres into waterways, and they'll still be legal to sell in the UK after October 2027. Plastic-fibre wipes are cheaper and widely available right now, but they block drains, take decades to break down, and — if they contain any plastic fibres at all — will be banned from UK shelves within two years. What's actually in a "plastic" wet wipe?
Most conventional wet wipes — the ones you'll find in supermarkets for 89p a pack — aren't made from anything that feels obviously plastic. They're soft. They flex. They feel almost like fabric. That's because they're made from spunlace nonwoven fabrics: synthetic fibres (usually polyester or polypropylene) bonded together by high-pressure water jets rather than weaving. The result looks and feels textile-ish but is, at its core, plastic.
Some brands use viscose (a semi-synthetic wood-pulp fibre) or blend it with polyester to soften the feel and reduce cost. A wipe can contain just 15–20% plastic fibre and still cause all the same problems: it won't break apart in water, it contributes to fatbergs, and it sheds microplastic fibres when it degrades.
PLA (polylactic acid) gets its own mention here because it's often presented as a plant-based plastic alternative. It is plant-derived, but it's still a plastic polymer — it doesn't break down in home composting conditions or in water. We don't use PLA in any dinky wipe, and we'd be cautious of any brand using it to claim "plastic free."
What's actually in a cotton wipe?
Cotton wipes are made from — cotton. Either 100% cotton or a blend, often with a small percentage of viscose to improve wet strength. The key thing is that cotton is a natural cellulose fibre. It breaks down in water over time. It doesn't shed microplastics. It composts (slowly, but it does).
For skin, cotton has a softer, more breathable texture than synthetic nonwovens. It holds moisture well without feeling slimy. It's why cotton wool and warm water has been the default recommendation for newborn skin for decades — dermatologists and health visitors consistently point to it as the lowest-irritation option for the first few weeks of life.
How do they compare on the things that actually matter?
Skin gentleness
Cotton wins here, particularly for sensitive skin. Synthetic fibres can have a slightly rougher microscopic texture, which matters if you're wiping the same patch of skin repeatedly (think nappy changes, or removing eye makeup). Cotton is less likely to cause friction irritation, and because it's a natural material, it tends to have fewer processing chemicals in the finished product.
The caveat: the fibre is only part of the story. A cotton wipe loaded with fragrance, preservatives and alcohol can still irritate skin. The safest wipe — cotton or otherwise — is fragrance free and free of known irritants like phenoxyethanol and EDTA.
Environmental impact
This is where the gap is significant. Plastic-fibre wipes:
- Don't biodegrade in any meaningful timeframe (estimates range from 100 years upwards)
- Shed microplastic fibres as they break down
- Block drains and contribute to fatbergs when flushed
- Leave plastic residue in landfill indefinitely
Cotton wipes biodegrade — not instantly, but within a year or two in the right conditions. They don't shed microplastics. If they end up in a drain (which they still shouldn't — more on that below), the environmental damage is significantly lower.
Flushability
Neither cotton wipes nor plastic wipes should generally be flushed. Cotton breaks down faster than polyester, but a standard cotton wipe is still not designed to disperse in water the way toilet paper does — it holds together by design, because that's what makes it useful. Flushing any standard wet wipe, cotton or plastic, risks blocking your drains.
The only wet wipes designed to be flushed are those specifically engineered for it — built from fibres that actively disperse in water, and tested to a recognised standard. Even then, we'd only ever recommend flushing one at a time and checking your local water authority guidance if you're on a septic tank.
The 2027 UK ban
From October 2027, the UK bans the sale of wet wipes containing plastic fibres. This covers the majority of wipes currently on UK supermarket shelves — anything made with polyester, polypropylene or PLA. Cotton wipes, made entirely from natural cellulose fibres, are already compliant. We never used plastic fibres in any dinky wipe, so we were ban-proof before the ban existed.
For shoppers, this means the market is going to shift significantly in the next two years. Some brands are quietly reformulating; others are still shifting plastic-fibre stock. If you want to get ahead of it, checking the ingredient list for polyester, polypropylene or any mention of synthetic nonwoven materials is the clearest signal.
Cost
Plastic-fibre wipes are cheaper. That's the honest answer. Cotton is a more expensive raw material, the manufacturing process costs more, and the retail price reflects that. If you're using hundreds of wipes a week on a newborn, the unit cost does add up.
The counter-argument is that you often need fewer cotton wipes to do the same job — they hold moisture better and tend to be more effective per wipe. But if budget is the real constraint, reusable cotton wipes (washable squares used with a small spray bottle of water) are significantly cheaper over time than any disposable, cotton or plastic.
So when does plastic actually win?
Honestly? Rarely, for the end user. The main advantage of plastic-fibre wipes is that they're everywhere and they're cheap. Manufacturers like them because the raw materials are cheaper and synthetic fibres are easier to process into consistent nonwoven sheets.
For the person using the wipe on their skin or their baby's skin, there's no meaningful benefit to choosing plastic fibres over cotton. The softness, the performance, the safety profile — cotton wins or draws on all of them.
What to actually look for when buying cotton wipes
Not all cotton wipes are created equal. Things worth checking:
- Fibre content: 100% cotton is cleanest; cotton/viscose blends are fine. Avoid anything listing polyester or polypropylene.
- Fragrance: listed on ingredients as "parfum" — skip it, especially for babies or sensitive skin. Fragrance is a common irritant and there's no functional reason for it in a wipe.
- Preservatives: phenoxyethanol and EDTA appear in some wipes and can irritate sensitised skin.
- Plastic-free certification or claim: check whether the brand means no plastic fibres, or just recyclable packaging. These are different things.
